Based in Portland Oregon SpeedyMoto provides some of the most breath-taking motorcycle parts on the market, all of which HouserWorks manufactures. In late 2007 SpeedyMoto started work on its new line of rear-sets, an adjustable alternative to the stock parts.

Client: SpeedyMoto / Project: Rear-Sets

SpeedyMoto's new rear sets (foot pegs) needed to be adjustable, crash worthy and light weight.

Adjustability came in the uniquely designed eccentric center collets, that, when rotated, moved the secondary arm like a push rod on a crank. This gives the rears sets a large ellipse of adjustment right where the rider needs it.

To help the new rear sets deal with the typical crash, we decided to make both the foot and toe pegs foldable. This may seem obvious to some, as most bikes come from the factory with cast metal folding pegs, but it is very rare to see machined folding pegs on rear sets. The mechanism for folding needed to be compact and strong and it took several prototypes to pin down the final pegs.

Before final production, the critical components were scrutinized by our engineer using the latest FEA (Finite Element Analysis) software to ensure the strongest, lightest design for SpeedyMoto.

Another hurdle for this project was the sheer number of components needed to build the entire assembly (24 individual part numbers in all), each needing several prototypes before a final design was reached. Because of the required timeline and quantity of parts, a staggered production schedule was made to maximize time spent between prototype and production part.

Fit and finish is of the upmost importance to SpeedyMoto and with this new project, they wanted to try a new matte finish on some parts. This required a new process of media blasting before anodizing to make the parts ultra matte instead of glossy. The resulting finish was beyond our expectations and when SpeedyMoto took the new product to market it was met with broad enthusiasm.
